We review dozens of small business websites every month. The same mistakes appear again and again – and every single one is costing the business owner money. Here are the seven most common, and how to fix them.
1. No Clear Call to Action
A visitor lands on your homepage. What do you want them to do? If the answer is not immediately obvious – a prominent button saying “Get a Free Quote” or “Book Now” or “Call Us” – they will leave. People do not explore websites. They scan for 5 seconds and make a decision.
Fix: Every page needs one clear, visible call to action. Not three. Not five. One primary action you want the visitor to take, repeated at the top and bottom of the page.
2. Slow Loading Speed
If your website takes more than 3 seconds to load, over half your visitors leave before they see a single word. Test yours at Google PageSpeed Insights. If your mobile score is below 50, you have a serious problem.
Fix: Compress your images. Remove unused plugins. Use a hosting provider with SSD storage and server-level caching. Consider a CDN for faster global delivery.
3. Not Mobile-Friendly
Over 60% of your visitors are on phones. If your text is too small to read, your buttons are too small to tap, or your menu does not work on mobile, you are invisible to the majority of your potential customers.
Fix: Test your website on your own phone right now. Every element should be readable, tappable, and functional without zooming. If it is not, you need a responsive redesign.
4. No SSL Certificate
If your website address starts with “http://” instead of “https://”, browsers display a “Not Secure” warning. Visitors see this and leave immediately. Google also ranks non-SSL sites lower in search results.
Fix: Enable SSL. Any decent hosting provider includes free SSL certificates. There is no excuse for running without one in 2026.
5. Outdated Content
If your latest blog post is from 2023, your copyright says a previous year, or your testimonials reference services you no longer offer, visitors assume you are no longer active. An outdated website is worse than no website.
Fix: Update your copyright year automatically. Review your content quarterly. Remove anything that is no longer accurate.
6. No Google Business Profile
Your website exists, but when someone searches for your business name on Google, nothing shows up in the local results panel. You are missing the most prominent real estate in search results.
Fix: Create a Google Business Profile, verify it, and keep it updated with posts, photos, and reviews. It is free and takes 30 minutes to set up.
7. No Analytics
If you do not know how many people visit your website, where they come from, or which pages they look at, you are flying blind. You cannot improve what you do not measure.
Fix: Install Google Analytics or a privacy-friendly alternative. Check it monthly at minimum. Use the data to understand what is working and what is not.
